The video Az Ötede Hafıza Vardı (The memory was a little ahead) was produced as a part of the project “Sounds of the City and the Art of Sound: Interdisciplinary Mixed Exhibition,” within the framework of the project “City Sounds as an Example of Intangible Cultural Heritage (Diyarbakır),” supported by the Culture Area by Amidart Culture & Art Community. It is now published on Youtube. Watch it below.

About this, Ali explains that

In this project where the sounds of daily life in Diyarbakır, one of the most important cities of ancient Mesopotamia, were recorded, I created a composition using the everyday sounds of Diyarbakır’s old Demirciler Bazaar. I collaborated with Amidart, which produces many projects in the field of culture and arts in Diyarbakır. This composition, created using electronic substructures, aims to reveal the memory of a city.”

The project involved artists from various disciplines, highlighting the richness of urban sound heritage by reinterpreting and designing recorded sounds, thus creating awareness about the city and its sounds through interdisciplinary productions. It consisted of six different works in various disciplines within the project.

Consept&Performans&Dance: Serhat Kural
Music: Ali Doğan Gönültaş
Camera: Serhat Hıdır Ak
Demirciler Çarşısı Sound Recording: Adar Bozaner-Murad Aygun
Editing: Lütfü İrdem
Production: Amidart Kültür&Sanat Topluluğu

According to Amidart Culture & Art Community:

The project aimed to establish a relationship between daily habits and urban texture through an auditory perspective, aiming to increase awareness and societal consciousness about cultural sounds. Although we may not be fully aware, sounds, as inseparable parts of our daily lives and culture, hold unique importance in terms of intangible cultural heritage. Unfortunately, sounds that are not recorded or archived tend to disappear. Due to the rapidly changing city sounds resulting from the dynamic life of a city, preserving the sound symbols of the city becomes essential and necessary for the sustainability of cultural memory and identity.

Within the project, symbolic sounds of present-day Diyarbakır were recorded throughout the project with technical equipment that provides the most realistic auditory experience.

One of the project’s objectives was to process the city’s sounds with artists from different disciplines, creating interdisciplinary productions, and ensuring that the works are digitally exhibited to be permanent and accessible.
